Running for over 14 years, Future Leaders Underprivileged Children's Centre (UCC) is an educational and sports programme dedicated to integrating out-of-school youth into the formal education system and promoting free vocational training for young adults at our sewing centre and beauty salons. We run a free school for over 130 local children aged 3-15, and volunteers can live and work at the centre to help our Ghanaian teachers educate the students who attend. If you are looking for teaching or coaching experience as part of an overseas placement, gap year or career break, volunteering with the UCC is the perfect way for you to help some of the poorest children in Accra. Volunteers spend two hours every morning individually working one-to-one with our youngest students to help enforce the basic reading, writing and maths skills they learn in the classroom. We break for one hour during which we provide lunch for our students, and then volunteers work together to hold two 1-hour lessons for the older children in wider curriculum topics like geography, art and science. Volunteers live together at the centre in dormitory accommodation, above the founders home and his large foster family, providing a comfortable midway between home-stay and hostel. All meals, accommodation, flight transfers, orientation and 24-hour live-in support are included in the placement payment. We aim to donate at least half of your payment towards the running costs of the UCC. We accept volunteers year-round and for any duration over 2 weeks.
